BEHAVIORAL ANALYTICS & VISUALIZATION LAB LAUNCHED!

Co-founded by Sabanci University and MIT Media Lab Human Dynamics Group to start its joint research activities in 2015-2016 academic year, the Behavioral Analytics and Visualization Lab, opened its doors on May 25, 2015. President Prof. Nihat Berker, Deans Prof. Ülengin and Prof. Menceloğlu as well as Lab Directors Assoc. Prof. Burçin Bozkaya, Assoc. Prof. Selim Balcısoy and Prof. Alex Pentland were joined in celebration with academicians, industry analysts and managers, and data scientists participating in the event.

We have two fully-funded PhD and MS scholarships in Computer Graphics Laboratory, Sabanci University, Istanbul. The project is funded by TUBITAK (Turkish NSF) and will focus on the following topics:

Light Source Estimation in Mobile Augmented Reality Scenes by Using Human Face Geometry

Light source estimation and virtual lighting must be believable in terms of appearance and correctness in augmented reality scenes. As a result of illumination complexity in an outdoor scene, realistic lighting for augmented reality is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a framework based on an estimation of environmental lighting from well-defined objects, specifically human faces. The method is tuned for outdoor use, and the algorithm is further enhanced to illuminate virtual objects exposed to direct sunlight. Our model can be integrated into existing mobile augmented reality frameworks to enhance visual perception.

Do 3D Visualizations Fail? An Empirical Discussion on 2D and 3D Representations of the Spatio-temporal Data

Analysis of spatio-temporal data has become critical with the emergence of ubiquitous location sensor technologies and applications keeping track of such data. One application area is location based services (LBS) for GSM networks and another area is shipment tracking. In this work we propose an interactive tool to detect patterns and anomalies for quality control and customer behavior analysis.

Entropy Guided Visualization And Analysis Of Multivariate Spatio-Temporal Data Generated By Physically Based Simulation

Flow fields produced by physically based simulations are subsets of multivariate spatio-temporal data, and have been in interest of many researchers for visualization, since the data complexity makes it difficult to extract representative views for the interpretation of fluid behaviour. We utilize Information Theory to find entropy maps for vector flow fields, and use entropy maps to aid visualization and analysis of the flow fields. Our major contribution is to use Principal Component Analyses (PCA) to find a projection that has the maximal directional variation in polar coordinates for each sampling window in order to generate histograms according to the projected 3D vector field, producing results with fewer artefacts than the traditional methods.

Entropy guided visualization of different data sets are presented to evaluate proposed method for the generation of entropy maps. High entropy regions and coherent directional components of the flow fields are visible without cluttering to reveal fluid behavior in rendered images. In addition to using data sets those are available for research purposes, we have developed a fluid simulation framework using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) to produce flow fields. SPH is a widely used method for fluid simulations, and used to generate data sets that are difficult to interpret with direct visualization techniques.

Term Projects of Arts and Computing Class

CS 450 is a transdisciplinary undergraduate course developed and currently taught at Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey. Designed to  bring together fine arts/visual communication design and computer science students for the creation and implementation of collaborative visual/audio projects that draw upon the specialized knowledge of both these disciplines, in it’s 9th year the course’s students work output has generated a substantial body of  publications presented at international conferences including  Siggraph, Siggraph Asia and Info-Vis. A visualisation technique for large temporal social network datasets in Hyperbolic space

Visualisations of temporal social network datasets have the potential to be complex and require a lot of cognitive input. In this paper, we present a novel visualisation approach that depicts both relational and statistical information of evolving social structures. The underlying framework is implemented by the usage ofHyperbolic Geometry to support focus context rendering. The proposed method guarantees representing prominent social actors through scaling their representations, preserves user’s mental map, and provides the user to reduce visual clutter by means of filtering.

GlyphLink: An interactive visualization approach for semantic graphs.

Graph analysis by data visualization involves achieving a series of topology-based tasks. When the graph data belongs to a data domain that contains multiple node and link types, as in the case of semantic graphs, topology-based tasks become more challenging. To reduce visual complexity in semantic graphs, we propose an approach which is based on applying relational operations such as selecting and joining nodes of different types. We use node aggregation to reflect the relational operations to the graph. We introduce glyphs for representing aggregated nodes. Using glyphs lets us encode connectivity information of multiple nodes with a single glyph. We also use visual parameters of the glyph to encode node attributes or type specific information. Rather than doing the operations in the data abstraction layer and presenting the user with the resulting visualization, we propose an interactive approach where the user can iteratively apply the relational operations directly on the visualization. We present the efficiency of our method by the results of a usability study that includes a case study on a subset of the International Movie Database. The results of the controlled experiment in our usability study indicate a statistically significant contribution in reducing the completion time of the evaluation tasks.
